Noted New York photographer John Yang, who passed away on this date in 2009, used his photography to look deeply into into the row houses and tenements of the UWS…and found that they looked back. Over the course of three years, he photographed the ornamental carved stonework faces gazing down from many of our neighborhood’s early buildings. Yang’s arresting images capture the personality of each stone face, celebrating in their weathered, haunted expressions the keen imaginations of the long-ago stonemasons of the Upper West Side.
