On this day, the Upper West Side’s IRT Subway System Interiors were designated the Upper West Side’s second Interior Landmark.

Jorge Solís, who would become the 2010 WBA Super Featherweight Champion, was born in Guadalajara, Jalisco Mexico, 

“Rise” by the Herb Alpert was the top song in America,

On the tube, ABC’s Comedy Block of “Happy Days,” “Angie,” “Three’s Company,” and “Taxi” ruled the night.

The New York Times lead headline read: 3 Mile Island Panel Critical of Utility and U.S. Regulators discussed a Final Draft Report produced by the Presidential Commission, which found that “the utility that operated the reactor ‘did not have sufficient knowledge, expertise and personnel to operate the plant or maintain it adequately.'”

In other news, page B11 covered A New Museum Traces Blacks’ Role in Fashion, highlighting the opening of Lois K. Alexander’s museum at 155 West 126th Street that exhibited pieces such as the “Sunday dress Rosa Parks designed in 1955” just before she changed history by refusing to yield her seat.
