On this day, the Upper West Side’s (Former) First Church of Christ, Scientist and New York Society for Ethical Culture were designated as the Upper West Side’s tenth and eleventh Individual Landmarks.

Also on this day,

U.S. Olympic sprinter Maurice Greene, and gold medalist in the 2000 games 100 meter dash was born in Kansas City, Kansas, 

“Rock the Boat” by The Hues Corporation was the top song in America,

On the tube, all networks were on a summer hiatus, but typically, ABC aired “Happy Days” against CBS’s “Good Times.” 

The lead New York Times headline occupied four columns and read: U.N. Reports Cyprus Cease-Fire; Turks Assert They Will Remain; Internal Unease Noted in Greece,” covering the governmental changes following a Turkish invasion of Cyprus. 

In other news, page 7 advertised the kick-off of the New York Philharmonic’s 10th Anniversary Season of concerts in the City’s Parks. The first program conducted by Andre Kostelanetz took place on the Sheep Meadow and concluded with fireworks sponsored by Macy’s and the Jos. Schlitz Brewing Company.
