JILL GILL Archive

Jill Gill is a born-and-bred New York artist and author. Since 1954, her paintings of seven Manhattan neighborhoods have been preserved in watercolor and ink, ordinary, unlandmarkable blocks that would’ve been lost to history. Her eleven UWS street scenes and commentary are an important part of her book “Site Lines: Lost New York, 1954-2022”.

Acknowledging Gill’s amazing work at preserving the UWS, Landmark West! received a NYPAP (New York Preservation Archive Project) Shelby White & Leon Levy Archival Assistance Initiative Award to digitize the working photos that Gill has taken through the years. This allowed LW! to digitize her UWS photographs and newspaper clippings previously inaccessible to the public. Below are examples of the files as well as their housing.
