Rodeph Shalom and West 80s Tour with Andrew S. Dolkart

June 27, 2018 @ 6:00 pm - 7:30 pm

Landmark West! invites you to experience the Upper West Side with one of the city’s best-known architectural historians, Andrew Scott Dolkart.  This unique walk begins at Congregation Rodeph Sholom on W. 83rd Street near Central Park. Founded downtown in 1842 by German immigrants, it is one of the oldest congregations in the United States. In 1929, they moved into a new Romanesque-style temple and sanctuary, designed by Charles B. Meyers. We’ll have special interior access, touring the exceptional travertine and terracotta sanctuary, marble stairway, and lobby with original chandeliers.  Back outdoors, Prof. Dolkart–widely acknowledged as a top authority on NYC’s vernacular historic architecture–will guide us along the surrounding brick and brownstone rowhouse blocks, bringing the streetscape of an earlier era vividly to life.
