The Upper West Side of Manhattan is filled with historic sites that help tell the stories of the past, both the struggles and achievements that got us to where we are today. Among these are many sites commemorating the people and important moments in our country and city’s civil rights history. Landmark West! invites you on a virtual walk to explore and gain greater appreciation for these markers of this important history.
UWS resident Leigh Hallingby, a licensed NYC tour guide, takes us on a virtual tour, beginning with one of NYC’s major memorials to Dr. King: the piece in front of the Martin Luther King, Jr. Educational Campus on Amsterdam Avenue at 66th Street by William Tarr. She will decode this most unusual and complicated sculpture, which many people tend to walk past without fully taking in. Further Upper West Side stops will relate to, among others, Frederick Douglass, Abraham Lincoln, Eleanor Roosevelt, and Elie Wiesel.
