A “Bird’s-Eye” Tour of West End Avenue…
as seen from the windows of a unique triplex apartment in The Evanston (610 West End Avenue), designed by architects George & Edward Blum and completed in 1911. This extraordinary apartment—a sensitive combination of two duplexes—features original architectural details, artwork reflecting a lifetime of expertise and collecting, and beautiful streetscape views. Our tour begins with the striking—and lovingly restored—cast-iron railing surrounding the building’s deep dry moat, a bold exemplar of the Blum brothers’ distinctive decorative style.*
Architectural historian Andrew S. Dolkart is a Professor in the Historic Preservation Program, Graduate School of Architecture, Planning and Preservation, Columbia University. He is the co-author (with Susan Tunick) of George & Edward Blum: Texture and Design in New York Apartment House Architecture. 610 West End Avenue is located in the Riverside-West End Historic District (designated by the NYC Landmarks Preservation Commission in 1989).
*The railing restoration was honored as one of LW’s “Unsung Heroes of the Upper West Side” in 2008.
