Central Park West Ahoy!
2018 begins with a bang!
Just this week we mentioned that the TIDES ARE TURNING and we have another great example to share.
After a prolonged battle to protect the former First Church of Christ, Scientist built 1899-1903 by Carrère & Hastings, the building has sat in a state of uncertainty. LANDMARK WEST! working with the CPW Neighbors Association–a grassroots tour de force (and 2017 LW! Unsung Heroes awardee) along with attorney Michael Hiller, argued against the self-implied hardship the developer sought at the Board of Standards and Appeals.
We are happy to announce the West Side’s own Children’s Museum of Manhattan (CMOM) has reached an agreement with the developer and this irreplaceable landmark will return to community use as the new home of CMOM!
A statement by CMOM executive director Andrew Ackerman noted “please let me assure you that for the next four years, the fun, learning, and discovery that your family enjoys at CMOM will continue unabated at our 212 West 83rd Street location until we can move into the new building, expected to be completed in late 2021.”
Coupled with the New York Historical Society, and the American Museum of Natural History, CMOM makes Central Park West an all-day stop for families on “Museum Mile West“.
We welcome the relocation of an Upper West Side institution and LANDMARK WEST! looks forward to the resurgence of 361 Central Park West, an Upper West Side treasure.
CMOM’s commitment to the neighborhood and our landmarks is further proof that the tide is turning. Here’s to smooth sailing!
