No. 338 is one of a group of seven houses that obtain their unity from their common materials and proportions, size, and regular cornice and sill lines, stepped down slightly to accommodate the change of grade of the street. The architect, John C. Burne, used two designs for these houses, alternating them in a pattern of A BB AA BB, with paired stoops and porticos. No. 338 is of the “B” type, distinguishable by a two-story oriel, ending in a bowed cornice, with square-headed windows throughout the building. Each building is three bays wide, with three stories above a raised basement, The basements are finished in rock-faced masonry, with two windows fronted by decorative wrought iron grilles, and a basement door under the stone porticoes shielding double wooden doors with transoms. Panels of carved stone ornament, stringcourses and sillcourses highlight the facades. The windows were all originally one-over-one, double-hung wood sash. A stamped metal modillioned cornice caps each house, its design alternating between buildings.

Alterations: The entrance portico as well as the foliate ornament at the base of the oriel have been removed. The stone facade has been painted off-white. The areaway has a pipe railing. The caps on the newel posts have also been removed.
